Identifying Giftedness in Preschool Children
As the new year begins, parents may feel excited about their child’s upcoming milestones and experiences, with preschool being a significant one. In a previous post, we discussed the importance of recognizing and nurturing giftedness in preschool children. This year, we’ll explore how to identify giftedness at this early stage.

Why Identifying Giftedness in Preschool Children Matters
Identifying giftedness early can help children develop confidence in their abilities, stay motivated, and remain engaged in their education. Without early recognition, gifted children may struggle with boredom, underachievement, and even hide their talents to fit in with their peers. Addressing their needs early can set the stage for a strong foundation in creativity and critical thinking.
Traits of Gifted Preschool Children
While every child is unique, gifted preschoolers often share certain traits. Common signs of giftedness include:
- Advanced Language Skills: Gifted children tend to have a larger vocabulary than their peers. They often speak in full sentences early, use complex words, and express themselves clearly and thoughtfully.
- Mature Intellectual Abilities: Gifted children may display a more mature sense of humor and are often keen listeners who focus deeply on conversations. They may pick up on subtleties that others miss.
- Curiosity and a Love of Learning: These children often ask "why" questions and seek to understand the world in great depth. Their interests can be broad—from animals to science—and they dive deep into subjects that fascinate them.
- Early Problem-Solving Skills: Gifted preschoolers are quick to grasp new concepts and excel at solving puzzles or recognizing patterns. They can think critically even at a young age.
- Exceptional Memory: Many gifted preschoolers have an extraordinary ability to retain information. They may remember facts, names, or details from months earlier, surpassing their peers in recall.
- Creative Thinking: Gifted children often show creativity through imaginative play, inventing stories, or devising original solutions to problems.
- Intensity: Gifted children may exhibit heightened energy in various areas, including physical activity, sensory responses, creativity, intellect, or emotions. These intensities were once described as "overexcitabilities" (OEs), but modern thinking reframes them as "an abundance of innate energy" in these domains.
- Desire for Independence: Gifted children may resist doing things in a way that doesn’t make sense to them and may become frustrated when asked to follow rules or instructions that feel limiting or unnecessary.

Key Points to Remember
- Every child is unique: Children don’t need to display all of the traits above, and this list is not exhaustive. There are many resources available on the traits of gifted young children, such as one that includes age-specific characteristics.
- Giftedness can be specialized: A child’s gifts may show up in specific areas, such as language, mathematics, or artistic ability, often because they are more engaged in those subjects.
- Giftedness is fluid: As children grow and encounter new experiences, their gifted traits may evolve. What may be an obvious sign of giftedness at one age may become less apparent as they develop in other ways.
- Identification requires a team approach: At this age, identifying giftedness typically involves a combination of parent and teacher observations, cognitive testing (such as an IQ test), and sometimes input from an educational consultant. This comprehensive approach helps create a clearer picture of a child’s abilities.
